PHANTOMS OF THE MOUNTAIN
Powder magazineIsrael’s only ski hill Mt. Hermon is nestled in the Golan Heights next to Lebanon and Syria. The hill shares a base with the Israel Defence Force's elite alpine unit. Nicknamed the Phantoms of the Mountain, their white attire acts as camouflage while they patrol the area’s volatile border. The majority of the ski hill’s workers are from Majdal Shams, a once Syrian village near the base of the mountain inhabited by members of the Druze religion. When not searching for powder snow, these dedicated skiers work as ski patrollers. Their red jackets don a Star of David.
